Short Tips for Working A Room

Abbreviated from "Develop Your System for Working the Room" by Kayte Connelly

1.You’ve signed up.  You’ve got your business cards ready to go.  Mark the back of the cards with the date and location of the event.

2. Do your homework.  Who else is going to be there?  What is this event for?  What do you hope to get out of it?

3. Once you get there, let the room know that you have arrived and do it with class.

4. Come prepared to do business. Know what you want and go for it.  Identify who it is that you want to talk to and with and whose relationship you want to cultivate.

5. If you have the chance, be a sponge. Stand still for a moment.  Take a deep breath while you take in the room.  See what other successful people in the room are doing.

6. Pick your path.  If you are alone, walk up to the crowd where the person is, who is the most interesting person you can talk to during the evening.

7. Don’t intrude.  Pick the best time to talk with them, but know they are there and let them know that you are there as well.  This may be just a simple nod across the room.

8. Always, always, give the other person the chance to speak first.  Ask them leading questions that might give you a clue as to how your might partner with them.

9. Determine if you have mutual contacts.  You may be able to refer to them during the conversation; or you might be able to follow through later with that contact.

10. Know when to take the initiative and when to back down from the conversation.  If you become known for being obtrusive or stubborn, you will clear a room out before you make a connection.

11. Collect all the information that you have gathered and follow-up.  Hook up with them tomorrow.

12. Take on partners.

You are recruiting while your networking.  Enlist people who will remember you for your unique gift, whether it be product or service and who will want to be associated with a winner.  How you present that gift will leave a lasting impression in their mind. We can’t all be stars, easily recognizable for being a great athlete, a great songwriter, a great musician or producer.  But, you can stand out and be elevated to a position of greatness if you are a giver and treat people fairly.

Its that kind of initiative that will make you successful.  Its knowing where you’re going and working that room with style and finesse that will get you to your dreams quicker, and help you achieve your personal and financial goals.
