Last evening was one of the most creative collaborations of musicians I have recently experienced. From the stage at the 2007 First Energy Berks Jazz Fest, came the announcement ,"Wecome to Soul Summit. .....There are over 6000 albums represented here tonight..." Let me repeat that 6000 albums. What an incredible array of talent and synergy. The mastermind behind it all, Jason Miles worked it and directed an outstanding array of artists - each respected in their own right. Incredible to me is how Jason comes up with new content each year. There is no dearth to whom should be celebrated, which artist should be honored. There is no dearth to the supply of talent that should be selected for each tribute.

The only dearth is to identifying outlets for funding for more collaborations in a timely manner. As Jason reminded the audiences, "the creators of classic rhythm & blues recordings - real music..."
are leaving us. My question: How can we all take responsibility and find ways (money to back such partnerships)? How do we capture the attention of the major record outlets to generate the well deserved attention to these types of gigs?

When I watched Mike Mattison, I flashed on a younger Chubby Checker. Not because of vocal style or persona; I just flashed that way. Wouldn't it be great to find the money and attention needed for collaboration to bring Chubby and Mike together next year, for example?How would Bettye LaVette or Barbara Mason fit in to that equation? What about the Iceman? Chuck Jackson? How about some of the session players? Bobby Eli? T. Conway? The list is infinite - only limited by the lifespan of the artists.

The Berks Jazz Fest is a wonderful vehicle for all jazz genre collaborations that should all be documented. They are one time experiences. They should all be captured and treasured. What is sadly realized is that the list of "potentials" gets depleted every week. The opportunities are limited by the vision of the supporters.  The list of funding, either through sponsors, ticket buyers or other outrageous fundraising sources, is finite.

Any ideas? Act now.  Contact your local sponsors of any artistic endeavor.  Contact your legislators.  Let them know why art is important to YOU and that you have either the power of the vote or the power of the purse or both.  Tell these individuals what the impact is on your quality of life - your health and well being.  Pick up the phone; take out your pen.  The arts are important to you because........continued funding is needed because........Make it happen!
