Best Principled Solutions                             Preamble
We the members of the nonprofit community do solemnly pledge to do our best to uphold the rights and responsibilities of being a good charitable organization.  We promise to do our duty and gain the knowledge and understanding of Charitable Laws to serve our clients.  As board members we will set policy and assume fiduciary responsibility, raise funds, and place reasonable expectations on qualified, compensated staff, when we are able to hire them.  As staff, we will keep ourselves and our board members current on best practices and trends, execute said policy and perform the administrative duties to the extent of our physical capability.  As stakeholders, whether individuals or corporate, we will support the mission of the organization through participation to the extent permitted.

We will do our utmost to uphold our duties, to be transparent in our actions and to hold the respect of the public by remaining true to our mission and accountable to fellow citizens in these United States for whom we have been entrusted.

We perform all of these actions, with those benfitting from our mission in mind and recognize that we are neither bigger than the cause nor above reproach by the law.

I updated my home page today.  I've added some content, other bells and whistles and am putting finishing touches on a whole new artist selection.  I'm trying to determine how to permit you access to old newsletters and grant award notices by keeping them available to subscribers.

I'm furious.  With the new Penn Delco Education Foundation allegations, a whole new lot of smears are being thrust upon "nonprofits."  Why?  I don't buy it that a school superintendent and business manager didn't completely understand what they were doing. They are too educated not to know.  How does a treasurer go around bids without understanding implications?  How does a brick alumni walkway remotely resemble the outcomes of a technology grant?

I do know that there are many well intentioned board members out there that genuinely want to lead in the fashion that the laws were designed.

I'm concerned. I'm involved in a national research project right now.  Few of the board members that we are contacting understand how their organizations originated.  They weren't around and no history was provided to them. They don't know who does know what specific benefits they've reaped by being a 501 (c)3 as opposed to any other nonprofit classification.  That just doesn't sit well.

Maybe, when the IRS hands out the 501 (c)3 status, and each organization is given its revered number, there should be a mandated "how to" course.  Would that serve the public better?  I realize there are many organizations that do "get it" and many, many more that want to "get it" but right now, what's making headlines, is another organization that didn't.  Another black eye for all nonprofits.  It's unfortunate.  It didn't have to happen.

What do you think?  How do you think we could diminish this perception?  What real steps could we take as interested citizens to assure the status of nonprofit is not abused, but used to its fullest potential?  Standards and compliance recommendations abound.  Is there a kindergarten course that should be mandated, or would that be too simple?

Spread the word.  Share the wealth of your experiences with great nonprofits.
