Closure on 2007 – Fresh Start for 2008

You may recall that in mid-December, I put out a call to assist with a personal challenge to obtain 25 goals from others to get them to the year’s end. I was overwhelmed with responses. I want to send a big thank you to all of you who participated. You will see many similarities, and I trust that you were able to put the information for "Setting Personal Goals" to good use. In essence, time management, money management, marketing, sharing more time with others and being more respectful of others were the five top contenders. Some were well wishers, checking in and promising to "talk later." (Did I say procrastination?) Some requested anonymity, so their names have been slightly altered to protect the innocent. (respecting boundaries)

As promised, in no specific order, here's the first 25 to respond:

To create a manageable '2008 Grant Deadlines Calendar' for each of my current 24 nonprofit clients.  Linda (woman business owner; nonprofit management consultant)

Stay focused and book 60 events for 2008! Kristie (woman business owner; event management)

Thank everyone who made a difference this past year. Michael (CEO, fund developer)

Let's talk in 2008. Eloise (government)

Take time off during the holidays for me; just me. Kelly (senior management, banking)

Be more understanding to my staff who deserves the time off that they will be requesting. Alan (CEO,manufacturing)

Send my photos to my designer so that she can move ahead on my website.  I'm copying her for even greater accountability.  (I must be insane!)   Patty (woman business owner, interior design)

"You are a nut." This lady is preparing for a well deserved retirement (President of Nonprofit)

Organize my marketing plan for 2008 and to have come up with an exact daily schedule and monthly schedule that will help me reach my marketing goals for 2008. Heather (woman business owner; insurance)

Be more careful about how I spend money! Working more should not mean spending more...hello. Cantahora (vocalist)

Good luck. Please don't include me in any kind of a blog. Marylise (woman business owner)

Finish the piece I've been working on...for months, I tell 'ya. Sammi (visual artist)

Hopefully, in the New Year I will get to spend a day in Manhatten at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Maxine (tourism industry)

Having all applications for schools mailed in along with finding, completing and submitting at least two applications for grants and/or scholarship aid. Gigi (manager, museum)

Collect all of my royalties. Abdul (songwriter)

Convince the board we need to hire a fund developer. Johnni (Executive Director, nonprofit)

Finish book. Bobby Joe (fiction writer)

I would like to be engaged. Jorge (music producer)

Dance, dance, dance; more, more, more. Jeremiah (CEO, Financial Management)

Figure out a way to plan for mo' money coming in next year. Celeste (restaurant manager)

Make time for me family. Sharim (public relations manager)

Balance my finances with my spending habits. Gerard (Sales supervisor limousine services)

Get home to see my family. Martinique (waitress)

Develop more products. Alphonse (trainer)

Number 25 took it to the limit. Congratulations to Brian, teacher who posted six outrageous goals and the steps to achieve them for 2008. They were targeted, and will surely lead him to a purposeful, intentional full year.

So now what? Look at your own goals. Write them down. It gives them a life and makes them resolute. You are making a commitment.

Find someone who will hold you accountable. Report back here, in the comments about how you are doing during the course of the year. Let us help you fulfill your goals. Check back in to ask questions or cheer others on.

Go for it. If not now, when? This is your year. It's your turn. This could be the biggest year of your life, if you truly want it.

Best of luck!!!

You know, just articulating my goal in writing to you was enough to give it the top-of-mind awareness I needed to dig in and achieve my stated goal. Maybe it was that strange quiet that falls on the nonprofit world from December 24th to January 2nd, but I finally had a block of time to PLAN and commit that PLAN to paper. The reaction of my 24 clients to my '2008 Plans' for each of them was so varied that it could be a study in human psyche! Some of them jumped right in and added their own ideas and expanded and elaborated and enhanced what I had done, making it even a better tool. Others were overwhelmed to see a year of work, (hours & hours & hours of it), all laid out for them on the first of January. Their emailed responses upon receiving my "2008 Deadlines Calendar" were edged with new stress. And another sub-set of my clients reacted by calling for face-to-face meetings to talk. So, for much of the first half of January, I’ve spent considerable time comforting, reinforcing, and encouraging my clients. I’ve been reminding them that my firm will be doing 'the heavy lifting' for the work I’ve committed to paper, and that 2008 is looking to be a year of accomplishments and striving for more. And that together, as collaborators in the Body of Work so explicitly laid out in my 'PLAN', we are more than up to the challenge. Thanks, Kayte!
